My Shipping Container Project

My project involved designing an office space for my client within a couple shipping containers, using the small space creatively.

User Profile

Name: Alan Williamson

Age: Early 50’s

Occupation: European Commercial Director, for a major Global Petrochemicals Company

Lifestyle: Fairly modern active lifestyle

Hobbies: Classic Formula Ford racing, Tennis, Auto Testing and keeping fit

Home Life: married, 2 daughters, cat and dog, son in law

Working hours: Typically 8:15 too 6:30

Daily Routine: predominantly an office job, occasional european and international travel.  Daily routine subdivided with replying to e-mails, local team meetings, bsiness calls, regional/international internet meetings.

No fixed breaks and lunch, lunch usually eaten at desk.

Office essentials: Comfortable well-lit desk and working space to be able process emails and calls, with limited own desk storage for papers pens etc. Prefer an open office space environment to be able to engage with my team and for my team to be able to see me without being overlooked at my desk. So low level divides between clusters of desks etc. and PC privacy screens. Good internet and WIFI connection for my PC to be able to work efficiently on emails and connect to company systems + ability to make and receive calls via internet preferred, land line therefore not required, but easy access to a shared printer/copying machine is. Office must be open and airy with good natural and manmade lighting and stable heating/cooling throughout the year. Minimum a small break out area next somewhere to buy coffee/snacks (good coffee is an essential! Think Nespresso standard) and toilet facilities. One large meeting rooms capable of accommodating up to eight-ten people + a couple of smaller break out rooms for 2-4 people to allows smaller meetings + private working space for confidential work/calls etc. All the meeting rooms need the ability to present information electronically from a PC to everyone in the room, connection to internet and for everyone in the room to participate in conference calls. One particular requirement for any chemicals site based office such as Hull is that it must be blast proof to a certain level i.e. things like coated windows etc. to prevent glass fragments, stronger walls and ability to secure to the outside floor so it doesn’t get blown over in the case of an explosion etc. Also ability to be converted to a toxic refuse i.e. air tight and ability for the occupants to survive for at least two hours on the offices own air supply without needing any outside top up. Note. you can get containerised offices that do this as we use them on site during major maintenance and projects.

Nice to have: Open larger flexible social /break out area to eat lunch (tables etc.) hold larger meetings (so again ability to project from a PC, connect to news etc. and show internal company branded materials), Private kitchen to prepare food (lunch)/own drinks, Hot desks/standing up working spaces for visitors and for stretching (this could be combined with above flexible social/ open office space), general company branding, cappuccino machine, video/virtual conferencing facilities in the meeting rooms. More shared larger storage areas although through the use of electronic media the requirement for this is a lot less then it use to be.
